Living to My Potential

(Do we live our lives to their full potential? Do we ever reflect about the purpose for which we were born? In our own way, we, in varying measures, try to be successful, possibly purposeful. Following our instincts and inspirations, we seek our ambitions and choose to become selfish or altruistic, live upto our potential or squander opportunities, mostly both, in our own unique manner.

How wonderful it could be if someone were to guide us about the potentials that were gifted to us, long before we stood before our Creator!)

As I stood before the God

Head bowed, hope alive in heart.

Waiting with bated breath

The judgment on my life spent.

He looked up, then looked sideways.

At a wise- looking serious man

With a flowing bright beard

Chitragupta! God’s booming voice rang.

A sheaf of paper was.

Placed before Him, without a word.

He seemed to peruse them, and

Raised His head again.

You lived your life well.

The voice this time was.

Soothing and melodious

My heart leaped with anticipated exhilaration!

Yes, you did several good deeds.

Helped others and were compassionate.

And you sinned only occasionally.

And loved your family and friends selflessly.

I am inclined to assign you.

To heaven but a little question

Troubles me that I must ask you.

What prevented you from doing more.

I was perplexed, unable to fathom.

The purport and purpose of the question

Did I not do all that?

It was possible for me to do.

Yes, the voice was still sweet and soothing.

His demeanor still kind and reassuring

Could you not have done more?

And He reeled out, many things I seemed to have forgotten.

Yes, the haze was clearing.

Memory was serving me better now.

Did I not live to my potential?

And squandered many opportunities to do good.

Then came the stunner.

Heaven or return to earth?

He asked benignly.

I was speechless, dazed, dumbfound.

I ask you,

Is it more honourable to return and

complete an unfinished task; or be prudent.

And seek the bliss and pure joy of heaven?
